Hosted by Billy Crystal for the ninth times, the 84th Annual Academy Awards took place on Sunday February 26th 2012, in Los Angeles and, without many expectations, French film The Artist ended up being the big winner of the night. French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius’ critically-beloved homage to classic Hollywood black-and-white silent cinema walked away with five Academy Awards in total, including prizes for Hazanavicius as director and Jean Dujardin as lead actor. Martin Scorsese’s 3D film Hugo also took home five oscars while The Iron Lady was the only other film to take home multiple awards with two honors, including Meryl Streep’s third Oscar.

Other films represented with wins include The Descendants, The Help, A Separation, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Undefeated, Beginners, The Muppets, Midnight in Paris and the short films The Shore, Saving Face and The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.
