Cornelis Theodorus Maria van Dongen otherwise known as Kees Van Dongen or Van Dongen was a Dutch painter born in the suburbs Rotterdam January 26 1877. He is best known for being one of the fauves, “a group of early 20th century Modern artists whose works emphasized painterly qualities and strong colour moved to Paris around the age of 20 and eventually acquired the French citizenship in 1929. He later died in Monte Carlo at age 91.

If you are in Montreal or coming to Montreal soon, take a look at the Van Dongen exhibition painting the city fauve presented at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from January 22 to April 19 2009. We are very excited as, the Montreal exhibition will present for the first time in North America, some 200 outstanding works of the collection by Van Dongen recently acquired by the Nouveau Musée national de Monaco.
