2016 Australian Open

The 2016 Australian Open will take place from January 18-31, 2016. The first of the Grand Slam events, followed by the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, the Australian Open is held annually during the last 2 weeks of January. Notorious for having an extremely high attendance, second only to the US Open, many view the Australian Open as a benchmark for the rest of the year’s Grand Slam events.

Held at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia, the Australian Open is a major tennis tournament where many of the world’s top-ranking players compete for the top prize. The tennis tournament features categories for men, women, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles, as well as wheelchair, legends, and exhibition events. First held in 1905, the Australian Open marks the beginning of the Grand Slam events.

The entries for the 2016 Australian Open will only be announced during the 2nd week in December, so sports analysts and tennis fans can only speculate who will be competing. They can, however, expect most of the highest ranked tennis players from around the world to compete, and can look to past Grand Slam tournaments to try to predict the 2016 outcome. We expect reigning male singles champion Novak Djokovic, who has taken home 5 titles, reigning female singles champion Serena Williams, who has won 6 titles total, to return to defend their titles. The tournament is less than a month away, and with 2015’s total prize money at $40M USD, the anticipation is quickly building!
