A day in Monte Carlo, Monaco: The food, the luxury hotels and events
A day in Monte Carlo, Monaco: The food, the luxury hotels and events

Everything about Monaco is a quiet statement that says: style, elegance, a meticulous sophistication: the epitome of European luxury. And because this image and message is so consistent, one cannot help but be elevated and enveloped in it. Down to the streets and pavements, the city is scrubbed clean every morning. Everything is crisp, orderly, pristine…not a speck out of place. Everything, from parks to apartments to civic buildings, high-end boutiques (CHANEL, Dior, Prada, Gucci, Hermès, Canali, Chloé, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Céline, Yves Saint Laurent etc…) and shops as well as luxury hotels are maintained, manicured, restored to perfection. There is nothing inauthentic or synthetic about all this, it is a pleasure to be in its midst. It was Somerset Maugham who dubbed Monaco “a sunny place for shady people”.

The two-square kilometers principality reportedly has 30,000 residents but some 130,000 bank customers holding an estimated €60bn. Not content to rest on its formidable laurels, Monaco is a city that innovates. There is ample evidence of investment in new buildings and tourism infrastructure. Another impressive thing is the sheer number of events and activities on offer: ballet, opera, formula 1, concerts, museums are all here in abundance. For a high profile, high visibility event? Clear the diary for the Rose Ball and Art Monaco in March, the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix in May or the Red Cross Ball in August. Don’t forget to make the short visit up in the hills to la Turbie, which boasts a two-star Michelin restaurant, Hostellerie, and an associated bistro La Fontaine, where village locals dine. Both are operated by chef Bruno Cirino and are absolutely great.

Monaco’s Roman heritage is not hidden, and in la Turbie we find the tower dating from the time of Emperor Augustus, commissioned and dedicated to his victory over the Ligurian tribes. We check in to the Hotel Metropole, 2010 winner “Best Hotel in the World” from the Leading Hotels of the World group. A lovely hotel that offers first class quality you might expect. Everything about the Metropole, its décor, ambiance amenity and service, speaks of quality and sophistication. I can personally attest to the service offered by the very upper-end Spa: the massage provided by Ms Yokoyama was excellent and above the usual. The pool is generous with an undercover area, and a sunny deck that is also a popular outdoor dining option. It is a lovely spot, but as beautiful as it is, the whole area, including the dining area, will soon be redesigned by fashion icon and designer Karl Lagerfeld. The relaunch is due for launch in May 2012.

Don’t forget the two Michelin star Jöel Robuchon Monte-Carlo, run by the most starred chef in the world of the same name – at last count 26 stars, as well as the Mediterranean Haute cuisine of Chef Alain Ducasse at Le Louis XV restaurant inside Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo. There is also the one-star Japanese restaurant, Yoshi – an exemplary fine dining – contemporary cuisine with delicate flavors and beautifully presented.
