François Pinault, the self-made French tycoon whose holdings include Gucci, Christie’s, and the Château Latour vineyard, has found a new role: champion of contemporary art. The French businessman, chairman and CEO of the retail company PPR – owner of Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Yves Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga to name a few, owns one of the biggest collections of contemporary art worldwide.
Pinault famously dropped out of school before finishing his studies and promptly embarked on a career in luxury goods, which has seen him amass a fortune, net worth of around $8.7 billion. A new book by Skira Rizzoli offers a glimpse into the $1.4 billion art collection of luxury magnate Francois Pinault. His collection includes works by the likes of Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst and Richard Prince and is housed in two private museums in Venice; the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana. Both properties were recently restored by the Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando and they (as well their contents) are the subject of this new book.
Ando said of Venice, “The dialogue – that is collision and friction – between the new and the old is the driving force in creating a city’s future.”The book is called “Tadao Ando Venice: The Pinault Collection at the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta Della Dogana“. On its cover it features installation art at the Punta della Dogana (above), the Venetian Republic’s original customs warehouse.
