When it comes to International Art show, Art Basel is the first word that comes out; Like the Venice Biennale, it has been called “the Olympics of the art world” by the New York Times and “La meilleure foire du monde” by Le Monde. This year, the 40th edition (Art 40 Basel) of the world’s premier international art show for Modern and contemporary works will start in two days, from June 10th to June 14th 2009, in the culturally-rich city of Basel located in northwest Switzerland.

Last year’s edition was extremely popular with over 60,000 people in attendance from art collectors, art dealers, cultural foundations, craftsmen, artists, curators to the general public. I have been lucky to attend Art 39 Basel and I have to say it is THE cultural event to attend.

This year’s edition features nearly 300 leading galleries from North and Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa as well as more than 2,500 artists- from the legendary figures in art history to the emerging up and coming artists. One of the great features of this year’s amazing edition is the presentation of “Il Tempo del Postino”, the world’s first visual arts opera at Theatre Basel.

Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Philippe Parreno, and co-curated by Anri Sala and Rirkrit Tiravanija, a group of leading visual artists will create a major experimental time-based presentation, each using up to 15 minutes of exhibition time with the stage assuming the role of the gallery space. Artists from the acclaimed presentation at the Manchester International Festival in 2007 include Doug Aitken, Matthew Barney & Jonathan Bepler, Tacita Dean, Thomas Demand, Trisha Donnelly, Olafur Eliasson, Peter Fischli/David Weiss, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Douglas Gordon, Carsten Höller, Pierre Huyghe, Koo Jeong-A, Philippe Parreno, Anri Sala, Tino Sehgal and Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Arto Lindsay. New contributions by Thomas Demand and Peter Fischli / David Weiss make this event a MUST SEE. Presentations of “Il Tempo del Postino” will happen on Wednesday June 10th, Thursday June 11th, and Friday June 12th 2009, all at 8.30 pm. Tickets can be purchased here.

Furthermore, the public program of this year’s Art 40 Basel includes other special events, such as Art Basel Conversations, Art Film, Art Lobby, Art on Stage, and Art Basel weekend. If you are near or around Basel, I encourage you to attend Art 40 Basel, the ultimate for art lovers.
