Louis Vuitton Core Values Ad campaign 2009: exceptional astronauts

“Some journeys change mankind forever.”

The latest Core Value advertising campaign by Louis Vuitton commemorates the 40th anniversary of man’s conquest of the moon, elevating the theme of travel as a personal journey to a celebration of a voyage of unsurpassed significance for all mankind, a journey that changed mankind forever. Once again beautifully shot by famed Annie Leibovitz (she did the previous Core Values Ad Campaign with Francis Ford Coppola and his daughter Sofia), the ad features exceptional people such as Buzz Aldrin who became the second man to set foot upon the moon aboard Apollo 11, the first lunar landing; Jim Lovell, most famous as the commander of the Apollo 13 mission, which suffered an explosion en route to the Moon but was brought back safely to Earth by the efforts of the crew and mission control; and Sally Ride, who in 1983, became the first American woman and youngest American (at the time) to enter space as a crew member on Space Shuttle Challenger.

The new visual was shot on the high plateaux of the Californian desert (see the making of below), from where, on a clear night, the Moon takes on an almost supernatural intensity. You can definitely appreciate the scenery and the Louis Vuitton bag in Monogram canvas, nonchalantly thrown into the mix.

Antoine Arnault, Head of Communications at Louis Vuitton, says: “With this latest impressive execution of the award-winning Core Values campaign, Louis Vuitton and its advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather have proved their ability to push the boundaries once again. Space represents the final frontier, and the Moon is the destination beyond which no man has yet traveled.”

The tag line, in an echo of Neil Armstrong’s famous words in 1969, states: “Some journeys change mankind forever”.

The ads will hit magazines in July issues, be sure to get your copy.
