Every year for 12-13 days at the same period, our great city of Montreal becomes the venue where fans of all types of jazz-related music converge for the greatest celebration of music. Indeed, the Montreal International Jazz festival (the largest Jazz Fest in the world and one-of-its-kind in North America) features top names and up-and-coming artist from around the world.

To celebrate the festival 30th anniversary, Montreal welcomed the American soul-pop musician Stevie Wonder. Indeed, yesterday June 30th 2009 Stevie Wonder opened this year’s edition and gave the inaugural concert at La Place des festivals (the new Montreal festival site). It was his first visit to the festival, and over 100,000 fans were happy to see the great Stevie Wonder performs on a free outdoor show despite the rain. You can definitely imagine the stellar performance he gave us. We remember all his great hits that live forever in our memories: Isn’t she lovely, My Cherie Amour, Part time lover, I just called to say I love you, Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours, Superstition, You Are The Sunshine of my life.

In honor to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson who died last Thursday June 25th 2009, Stevie Wonder addressed the crowd to pay tribute to another legend. The singer was clearly moved when he crooned “Michael knows that I’m here and I love you”. I don’t know about you, but I was in tears at that time…

This year’s 30th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal includes other great headliners such as hometown piano great Oliver Jones, big names such as Tony Bennett, Wynton Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, Ben Harper, Joe Cocker, Estelle, Jeff Beck, Mos Def, Jackson Browne Souljazz Orchestra and Jonas. They will join the roughly 3,000 musicians putting on more than 600 concerts in a variety of venues during the festival’s 13-day run.

The 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival runs from June 30 to July 12, 2009 in downtown Montreal at the newly designed site at the Quartier des Spectacles in an area closed for car traffic.
