It is time once again for the American hard court tennis series; part of the Grand Slam, also called the four majors including the Australian Open, the French Open Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the 2011 U.S. Open Tennis Championship played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York City starts today from Monday August 29 to Sunday September 11, 2011.

The last of the four Grand Slam events, the U.S. Open is played at a variety of venues at the USTA National Tennis Center. The centerpiece of the complex is Arthur Ashe Stadium (named after Arthur Ashe who won the men’s final of the inaugural US Open in 1968), which holds approximately 24,000 tennis fans. However, there is also the 10,000-seat Louis Armstrong Stadium, which formerly was the primary court until Arthur Ashe Stadium debuted in 1997 and the Grandstand Stadium with roughly 6,000 people.

Mardy Fish, at No. 8 the highest-ranked of 14 American men in the singles, meets German Tobias Kamke in the first match in Arthur Ashe Stadium at 1 p.m. while for the women’s, Russia’s Maria Sharapova, the women’s No. 3 seed and 2006 U.S. Open winner, follows against Heather Watson of Britain. Later on, other interesting matches include American tennis player Venus Williams who won the U.S. Open in 2000 and 2001 against Russian Vesna Dolonts and third seed Swiss player Roger Federer versus Colombian Santiago Giraldo.
