Florence is known as the city of the lily, it is a city of wonderful palaces, piazzas and incredible art and culture. Florence is said to be the home of the modern Italian language and the city where the purest Italian is spoken. It is in Florence that the artists Cimabue, Giotto, Michelangelo and Donatello lived and worked. Dante, the father of Italian literature, was a citizen of Florence and The Divine Comedy, his epic work was written after his exile from this great city.

The aristocratic leaders of Florence envisaged their city as an artistic centre and commissioned the incredible Piazza della Signoria as a public space for the citizens to enjoy – complete with the Loggia dei Lanzi an open-air sculpture gallery and original setting for Michelangelo’s David. The Cathedral of Florence Il Duomo was designed to be the largest and most impressive church in Northern Italy. The Duomo and Baptistery are fine examples of Florence’s renaissance heritage. Today Florence is also a great city for shopping; handbags, leather goods, shoes and designer goods can all be found in abundance. From bargains in the public markets to the latest fashions in top designer stores – Florence has it all!

As a first time visitor to the city I was overwhelmed by the Uffizi Gallery with its amazing collection of paintings by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Massaccio and many others. The Ponte Vecchio, the medieval bridge linking the north and south of the city is still an incredible collection of goldsmiths and jewellers.

Don’t miss the famous Tuscan bread and incredible olive oils. The numerous restaurants and trattorias will deliver excellent Italian food and fine Tuscan wines. Exclusively arranged by our partner and friend at Grand Tourist, this short break tour in Florence will be a delight to any art, architecture, food and wine lovers.
