The Fan Museum London

Opened in 1991, the Fan Museum (yes, you read that correctly,) is not a London attraction that you typically hear about, however it is a wondrous stop full of whimsy and history, fun for the entire family. Located within two grade II listed houses built in 1721 in a Greenwich World Heritage Site, the museum is home to over 4000 fans, fan leaves, and related items from around the world, dating from the 12th century.

The only museum in the UK dedicated to the history and art of fan making, the Fan Museum has cultivated a special familial atmosphere in its historical building that makes it feel more like a home than a museum. Visitors can enjoy afternoon tea in their picturesque orangery, lined with beautifully detailed murals. The unique garden room, overlooking a Japanese-style secret garden, is the ideal location to unwind and enjoy a traditional English teatime.

The Fan Museum houses an impressive permanent collection of world-renowned fans and fan leaves, including the Hélène Alexander Collection, along with acquisitions and gifts received, with a particularly extensive 18th and 19th century European fans.   Due to conservation concerns, the entire collection is not permanently displayed, and for that reason, the selection of fans is changed 3 times a year. With a continuously changing collection, educational displays, and special events, one visit to the Fan Museum will be the beginning of a repeated discovery. Currently exhibiting Fans of the Belle Epoque until September 2nd, the museum will debut its Made in China Exhibition on September 5th, 2015.
